18 months.

I’ve been meaning to post an 18 month update on Eloise for a bit now {about a month, actually, considering she’s now over 19 months}. Since I see this blog, at least in part, as a journal for our family, it seems like a good place to record updates on her development, her interests, etc. Plus, I have been HORRIBLE about updating her baby book, so having this information recorded somewhere makes me feel a little better.

DSC_0398

E hit the 18-month milestone just before Christmas. Over the past couple months, she has really started to turn into a toddler, and she all of a sudden seems like an actual person {though miniature}, rather than a baby. She has such a unique little personality. At times, she is sweet, quiet, observant, and such a good listener/rule-follower. This seems to be the consistent report from her daycare teachers, who note that she doesn’t talk much when she’s there, is always helping clean up, and follows instructions better than any other child in her class. However, at home, she’s often wild and silly – she runs and jumps on the bed, screeches and makes the silliest noises, and loves to be the center of attention. She talks a lot, using a mixture of actual words and baby jibber jabber. She’s also become sassy and outright defiant at times – often telling us “no” or “mine” when things aren’t going her way.

DSC_0402DSC_0416

She is a pretty good eater, and she’s usually willing to try just about anything we offer her. Her current favorites are berries {especially black, blue, and raspberries}, yogurt, broccoli, raw red peppers, lasagna, and anything sweet. She’s becoming pretty efficient with a fork and spoon. We also recently promoted her to a booster seat at the dining room table instead of her highchair, which is going well.

DSC_0390

Her favorite activities are playing in her kitchen {especially pretending to wash her hands}, jumping on the bed, anything having to do with Elmo, painting and coloring, and reading. She’s always been OBSESSED with books, but recently she started reading aloud to herself and her stuffed animals. She doesn’t say actual words when reading aloud, but she makes various little noises in a particular rhythm as if she were actually reading. It is the sweetest thing ever. In general, she’s just a little busy body, constantly “doing stuff,” as we like to say.

She’s currently working on learning her colors. Her favorite so far seems to be purple, which was also the first one she learned to identify and say. She loves to spot purple items around the house, in books, or out and about and shout, “PURPLE!”

DSC_0394DSC_0395

Of course, any update on E wouldn’t be complete without an update on her sleeping habits. Over the past few months, she has started falling asleep on her own at bedtime, which is amazing. We snuggle while she drinks her milk, brush her teeth, and sing a quick song before I tuck her in wide awake, and she then closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep as I leave her room. She was also sleeping through the night for a couple months, but after teething, traveling for the holidays, and an ear infection, she has consistently been winding up in our bed at some point during each night {as you may remember, she refuses to go back down in her crib after waking up in the middle of the night}. She’s been sleeping well in our bed without waking us up much, so for now I’m soaking up the extra snuggles and not worrying about crib training. I’m just happy that all three of us are getting some sound sleep for the first time in nearly two years.

Holiday Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers

My most favorite holiday tradition that I’ve picked up from Dan’s family is St. Nick’s Day. Depending on where you live, there is a good chance that you’ve never even heard of St. Nick’s Day – I hadn’t until I moved to Wisconsin for college and met a bunch of people from the Milwaukee area. It’s popular in Europe, but not at all here in the States, with the exception of Milwaukee and a few other small pockets. Anyways, St. Nick’s Day is a day of celebration for Saint Nicholas, an actual bishop who was known for leaving coins in people’s shoes. If this sounds at all familiar, it’s because the modern day Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas, and he is why we fill stockings with candies and gifts at Christmas.

St. Nick’s Day is December 6th. The night before, St. Nick visits your home and leaves goodies in your stocking {just like Santa}. As a kid, emptying my stocking was always my favorite part of Christmas morning, so I absolutely love having a day dedicated to that particular tradition. As a mama, it’s also been a fun excuse to get a few small, more practical, gifts for Eloise.

With St. Nick’s less than a week away, I’ve been picking up little things here and there for E’s stocking. Below are a handful of items that she either already has and loves, or things that I’m planning to stuff her stocking with this year. Even if you don’t celebrate St. Nick’s Day, these will make great gifts for your littles on Christmas or any other upcoming holiday.

Stocking Stuffers1. String Light Pajamas // 2. BabyLit’s A Christmas Carol

3. Where is Baby’s Christmas Present? // 4. Bracelets // 5. Bath Letters

6. Milk Bottle Cup // 7. Watercolors // 8. Mittens

9. Beanie // 10. Window Clings

Stay tuned for more holiday gift guides to come over the next few weeks!

Little Style // Flower Girl

At the end of October {on Halloween, actually}, Ellie will be acting as flower girl in one of my best friends’ wedding. The wedding’s theme is somewhat of a vintage spin on traditional autumn decor, with a bit of a Halloween influence {think apothecary jars, natural crystals, and bold autumn colors like mustard and copper}. The bridal party will be mostly in shades of grey, with a little tan and brown mixed in.

When the bride saw Ellie’s one-year photos, she asked if she could wear the same feather crown for the wedding. Obviously, I said yes, and I began to put together an outfit around the crown, taking into consideration the vintage-feel of the wedding decor. The final outfit is an ideal mix of vintage & sparkle {and I think she’s going to look like a little woodland nymph, which is perfect because the bride has always said that E looks like a little fairy}.

Eloise’s One-Year Pictures

To capture Ellie’s one-year milestone, I decided to shoot a few portraits of her. I almost always prefer lifestyle photography over posed portraits, because I think they more accurately capture personality and I love the idea of showing people in their own element. But, there is definitely a time and place for portrait-style photography. For example, when Eloise was first born, we had studio photos taken of her and our family, and I absolutely adore them. Also, because I am constantly taking pictures of her running around our house and playing outside, I thought it would be nice to do something a little different to document this special occasion.

Let me tell you, getting a 13-month-old to sit still and cooperate was tough. Because we have a relatively small apartment with a lot of windows, I only had a small area of wall space to work with. She was constantly running in and out of the frame and climbing off her chair. When we got outside, she was even more distracted. But, in the end, I am so happy with how the pictures turned out, and I think they capture her personality perfectly.

Strawberry fields forever.

DSC_0354

A few weeks ago, we spent a Sunday morning picking strawberries at a local farm {actually, it was on Father’s Day, while Dan and his dad were out golfing}. I have only been strawberry picking once before, back when I was in high school, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect or how E would handle it. Rather than trying to carry her up and down the row, we ended up just plopping her down on the ground {at that time, she wasn’t running around like a crazy woman yet}. At first, she seemed a little confused. We handed her a few strawberries to hold on to, but she still wasn’t sure what to do with them, and ended up subconciously squeezing them until her little thumbs were dug all the way in and juice was dripping everywhere. She had eaten strawberries plenty of times before this, but they had always been cut up. Eventually, we coaxed her into taking a bite out of one, and from then on, she was sold. She couldn’t get her hands on the berries fast enough – I’m pretty sure she ended up eating fifteen or twenty of them. By the time our basket was full, she had strawberry juice covering her hair, face, arms, legs, and clothes. We had to strip her down to her diaper before loading her into the car for the ride home.

On another note, these fresh berries were AMAZING. They were so ripe and flavorful, I found myself snacking on them as we picked. We ended up with quite a few, which are currently taking up space in my freezer. I am planning to make some sort of sweet treat with them, but I haven’t quite figured out what yet. Any suggestions?

Our Weekend // Fourth of July

This holiday weekend was packed with love, friends, family, good food, tasty drinks, and plenty of sunshine. It was the perfect way to spend our Fourth of July, and I wish we could do it all over again this weekend!

Sadly for me, Friday started out with a half-day in the office. We then headed up to Poynette, Wis. for a friend’s wedding. It was held at a beautiful barn out in the country. We got there pretty early {over-estimating our travel time in anticipation of holiday weekend traffic}, so the three of us explored the grounds for a while before the ceremony. Ellie stayed through the ceremony and cocktail hour {although as you can see from the pictures below, she and Dan watched from afar to avoid a meltdown}. Dan’s parents then picked her up, so that we could enjoy some nice adult time, just the two of us. We had a wonderful time, and even made some new friends! I also tried my first tom collins… Seriously, delicious! How have I never had one of these before? It is definitely going to be my go-to drink for the rest of the summer.

Dan’s parents live in Lake Delton, which is only about 30 minutes away from the wedding site, so we stayed there for the rest of the weekend. We spent Saturday and Sunday at the pool. On Saturday, the community held a Fourth of July Luau, complete with a bunch of grilled goodies and games for the kids. Ellie has really started enjoying the pool, which is so much fun for everyone. She loved playing with Mema & Grandpa, splashing, floating, jumping into the pool, and going down the slide in the children’s area {while Mama enjoyed soaking up some sun and sipping on bloodies}. She also is such a little doll in her swimsuit and sun hats!

On Saturday evening, we grilled out and played yard games. Unfortunately, Ellie did not get to watch the fireworks this year. I was concerned about how she would handle the noises, plus, she is still not sleeping great, so I didn’t want to mess with her schedule. While Ellie was snuggled up in bed, the rest of us enjoyed some drinks on the deck and watched the nearby fireworks through the trees.

We aways have such a relaxing and fun time when we visit Lake Delton. It seems to embody the quintessential “summertime” – sun, pool, golf, grill, yard games, beer, and summer cocktails. We usually head up there a few times each summer, and we are actually planning to head back in couple weeks for a weekend with a few of our close friends. Until then, it’s back to the daily grind and monotony of the work week {at least for me; Dan and E are busy enjoying summer break}.

Ellie’s Floral Birthday Party

DSC_0596

Last Saturday, we celebrated Eloise’s 1st birthday with a small get together at our apartment with our families and a few close friends. As you may remember from an earlier post, our theme was “with grace in her heart & flowers in her hair.” This meant lots of fresh flowers (some silk ones too), bright colors, flowy dresses, and moccasins. For food, we kept it pretty simple – brats and veggie burgers on the grill, pasta salads, chips and dip, and a few homemade sweets. We also made a pretty tasty sangria {recipe to come later}. The weather was perfect, and we had a wonderful time!

We got miss E all dressed up in a floral crown {made by my creative and oh so talented mama}, a sweet little embroidered dress, and her new moccasins. She made the perfect little boho birthday girl! She even let me snap a few portraits of her before the party.

For Ellie’s cake, we decided to make a slightly larger version of the cupcakes we made for the rest of the party goers, using a giant muffin tin. We actually just used white cake box mix and added our own homemade buttercream frosting. They turned out awesome! As you can see, E was a little apprehensive at first, but soon figured out what to do with it. I think she liked it {although, she seemed to like the chocolate bars better, just like her mama}.

Last week, our sweet Eloise turned one. I took the day off of work, hoping to spend the afternoon at the zoo or at the beach. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative with our plans, and instead it rained through the early afternoon. We spent the morning at home, opening presents and relaxing. In the afternoon, we ended up heading over to the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum. It was our first time there, and although we had fun, it wasn’t exactly geared towards children as young as Ellie. Nonetheless, it was nice to get out of the house for a while and explore a new place. After the museum, we stopped for some frozen yogurt, which surprisingly E was not all that into.

Eloise is now walking pretty consistently, although she’s still pretty wobbly, and she crawls when she wants to get somewhere fast. She says a handful of words, including “dada,” “mo” (more), “nana” (banana – means any food), “bo” (book), “ba” (ball), “baba,” “da” (dog), and sometimes “mama.” Her new trick this month is kissing, which usually involves a big, wide mouth, slobbery mess. She kisses her bunnies, her dollies, the dogs, mama and dada, and all of the babies in her books. She also has makes the silliest cheese face when she thinks she’s being funny. She is still not sleeping great {at least to some extent due to a string of ear infections that she’s had over the past three months} and routinely wakes up at 5 a.m. {not great for mama, who is absolutely not a morning person}. She has the sweetest personality though and is usually pretty chill and happy.

On another note, it’s a good thing that we’re done with her monthly photos, because she has absolutely no interest in cooperating with me anymore! Below the last one, along with a collage of week 1 through month 11. I cannot believe how fast the past year has gone by and that I now have a little toddler on my hands!

E.1st.Year

This past weekend, we had a small party for Ellie with our families and a few friends. I plan to share a few pictures from the party in a few days.

What Ellie Eats // 12 Months

DSC_0202 DSC_0203 DSC_0204 DSC_0207

Ellie has been eating strictly table food {plus her bottles} for about two months now. Although it has been a lot of fun, it can be a little stressful at times. When we started to make the switch from baby food puree, I had a really had time meal planning for her. Everyone says, “Just feed her what you eat.” In reality, that doesn’t always work out. She can’t handle anything spicy, and because she still only has a few teeth, she can’t eat anything that would require a lot of chewing. I am also more conscious about what I give her than I am with our food – I don’t want to give her anything too cheesy, fatty, salty, sugary, etc.

As she has gotten used to eating more and more table food, this has become less of an issue. She usually has her own fruits and veggies {which we prep for 3-4 days at a time} and then we adapt our meals to make them baby-friendly. We also have a few go-to meal options that we use when our meal doesn’t work for her.

I was also overly concerned with maintaining a well-balanced diet for her {this is my type-A side creeping out}. I kept searching for some sort of breakdown that would tell me exactly how many servings of each food group she needs. After spending A LOT of time on this, I finally found guidelines that make sense: at least 2 fruits, 2 veggies, 1 protein, 1 yogurt, and 1 carb each day. Following these guidelines, Ellie’s daily meals look something like this:

Breakfast: A fruit {almost always a banana} & a carb {if I’m feeling extra ambitious over the weekend, she’ll have a homemade muffin or pancake, otherwise it’s a frozen whole wheat waffle or cereal}.

Lunch: A fruit, a veggie, & a protein.

Afternoon Snack: Yogurt.

Dinner: A veggie, a carb or a protein, and usually some dairy {like cheese}.

Obviously, we don’t stick to this exact schedule every day. Lunch and dinner are pretty interchangeable. If we are eating something that Ellie can eat, or that we can easily adapt for her, then we’ll give her that.

DSC_0222

DSC_0213 DSC_0215 DSC_0217 DSC_0218

Below are some examples of what Ellie eats from each food group, if she’s not eating our meals:

FRUITS {these are easy}: bananas, oranges, any type of berry {especially blue blueberries and strawberries}, watermelon, grapes, applesauce, pears, and peaches.

VEGGIES: broccoli, cauliflower, squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, corn, carrots, and tomatoes {even though these are technically fruits?}. Keep in mind that almost all of these need to be steamed or cooked somehow.

PROTEINS: Chicken breasts {cubed or shredded}, turkey burgers {her current favorite}, veggie burgers, vegetarian hot dogs, vegetarian chicken nuggets, beans, and eggs.

DAIRY: A daily yogurt and sometimes a little cheese sprinkled on her veggies or meat if she needs a little bribe.

CARBS: Whole wheat waffles and pancakes, muffins, whole wheat pasta, bagels, and toast.
Watching Ellie go from breastfeeding and bottles to purées and now table food over the past year has been quite the adventure. Somedays, she has zero interest in eaiting. Most days, half  of her food ends up on the floor {and in the dogs’ bellies}. But for the most part, she loves eating “big girl” food and enjoys trying all sorts of new things.

DSC_0219 DSC_0220

The transition from breast milk and bottles to table food has been quite the adventure. Some days, Ellie refuses everything, even her favorite foods. Most days, half of her food ends up on the floor {and in the dogs’ tummies}. But for the most part, she seems to love eating “big girl” food and trying new things!

Party Inspiration // With grace in her heart & flowers in her hair

Ellie’s 1st first birthday is coming up in just a few weeks. If you know me, then you know that I’ve been (not so secretly) planning her party pretty much since the day she was born. I settled in on a theme a while ago – “with grace in her heart & flowers in her hair.” We plan to have a low key gathering with family and close friends by filling the house with flowers, grilling out in the backyard, and snacking on A LOT of treats. Below are some of my favorite items that I have already purchased and a few items that I am currently lusting over for the party. I can’t wait to share pictures after the big day!
