Create // Framed Chalkboard

A few weeks ago, Dan made a chalkboard for our dining room. I realize that I am WAY behind trend on this one – these things are everywhere, and you can buy them already in pretty frames at places like Hobby Lobby. But, I had been lugging this empty gold frame around for a few years and wanted to put it to good use. So, I convinced Dan to get handy and turn the frame into a functional chalkboard that I can use to display menus, messages, and doodles. It was a surprisingly easy task, and doing it ourselves allowed me to have complete control over the finished product.

GATHER SUPPLIES. You can find almost everything you’ll need at a craft store, like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

  1. A pretty frame {I found mine already empty in the clearance section at Hobby Lobby, but you could also use an old picture frame or a window}
  2. Chalkboard spray paint {if you’re feeling colorful, try something other than the traditional black}
  3. Super glue
  4. MDF board, cut to fit tightly into the back of your frame {we got this from a local lumberyard, but you could also check Lowes or Home Depot}
  5. Chalk

PAINT. Apply three to four coats of paint to the MDF board. Allow plenty of drying time between coats.

ASSEMBLE. Glue painted board into the back of the frame. Again, allow plenty of drying time.

SEASON. This step is important. You need to season the chalkboard before you use it. Just take a piece of chalk, turn it on its side, and rub it all over the board. First, cover the board with horizontal strokes, then vertical, and finally diagonal. When you’re done, wipe the board clean and it’s ready to use.

GET CREATIVE. Try different lettering, chalk colors, etc.

We’ve decided to hang our chalkboard above our bar cart {which is actually an antique sewing machine} in our dining room. Stay tuned to see how we’ve arranged the bar cart!
